Tips and Tricks for Tweeting

We all know that good content drives great results when it comes to social media, however sometimes it can be difficult thinking of content that will benefit your business and fit in with its goals and objectives.

Twitter is no exception, with the lifespan of a Tweet lasting about 18 minutes, it’s important you get your content strategy on point.

If you’re trying to determine what makes one Tweet stand out from the next, read on as we provide you with some tips and tricks to help your Twitter profile stand out.

Keep Copy Short and Sweet

Tweets can contain up to 280 characters, however this doesn’t mean you need to use every single character to compose the perfect Tweet.

Try to keep every Tweet focused on one specific message, rather than trying to communicate a ton of ideas.

If you do have a lot to say, consider splitting content into a number of Tweets, link to content on a website or start a Tweet thread.

Be Conversational

Twitter is all about the conversation. Asking questions is an effective way to interact with your audience, show your brand’s personality and gather feedback. Ask playful questions, ask for opinions on new products or services, or even ask your followers to be the deciding factor on a query - the polls feature is a great way to do this.

Remember, Twitter is one big conversation, so make sure you’re asking the questions to get the conversation started!

Add Visuals

Bold images, videos and gifs add a touch of personality and increase results. They also make your Tweet stand out from a stream of imageless text.

If you are using images, a landscape image (2:1 dimension) is the best choice.

Include Calls to Action

Every time you Tweet, ask yourself “what do I want people to do when they see this?” and make sure you include this in your Tweet!

Words such as ‘comment below’, ‘tell us’, ‘click here’ ‘contact us’ or ‘sign up’ are all effective calls to action that tell your follower what it is you want them to do with your Tweet.

Limit Tweets to 1-2 Hashtags

Hashtags allow you to expand your reach and tap into relevant conversations. Focus on keywords relevant to your business and stick to one to two hashtags per tweet.

Wondering how to use hashtags? Check out our blog ‘It’s all About the Hashtag #JustSaying’ and you’ll have them sorted.

Connect with Retweets and Replies

Don’t bother with Twitter if you’re not going to retweet relevant content or reply to Tweets directed at you. Retweeting positive customer feedback, helpful articles or relevant news that aligns with your business’ voice not only builds up following but can also help to strengthen your Twitter feed.

If you come up against any negative comments, switch to the Direct Messages function to resolve. Learn more about this in our blog ‘How to Deal with Negative Social Media Comments.’

Pin important Tweets at the top of your profile.

If you have a Tweet that’s more important than the rest, pin it to the top of your profile page by clicking the downward-pointing arrow on the right-hand side corner of your Tweet and selecting ‘Pin to your profile’.

Jump on Trending Topics

A simple way to increase engagement on your Tweets is to take a look at the trending topics on Twitter, which typically have an accompanying hashtag, then join in the conversations when it is relevant.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box to participate in conversations about trending topics, however, make sure that the topic you are engaging with is trending for the right reason. We recommend doing a little research here to make sure if fits in with your business brand values.

Our blog ‘How to Make the Most of a Trending Topic on Social Media’ provides everything you need to know about jumping on a trend.

Share a Tweet in a Fleet

Rolled out to users at the end of 2020, Fleets are a way to post content on Twitter that will disappear after 24 hours. They are only postable and visible on Twitter mobile apps and can be text, gifs, photo or video posts. You can customise Fleets with a variety of background colours and text options and anyone able to send you a Direct Message can reply to your Fleets.

If you’re using Facebook or Instagram Stories as part of your social media strategy, you may want to add Fleets to your list!

Check Analytics

When you’ve got into the swing of Tweeting and have at least a month’s worth of Tweets, take a look at the analytics to see which type of Tweets are performing well and which ones aren’t. Once you’ve analysed the results, you’ll be able to mould your content plan to what works best for your business.

Twitter analytics can be found on your Twitter profile and include metrics such as impressions, engagement, top Tweets, followers and mentions to name a few.

So, there you have it some tips and tricks to get your Twitter feed started. Remember, if you’re new to Twitter, it takes time to build a following and you’re not going to get it right with Tweets the first time. It’s all about experimenting and seeing what works best for your business and what doesn’t work at all.

If you get it wrong, start again! That’s the beauty of Twitter…an ineffective Tweet can soon be forgotten, as it isn’t long before a new Tweet comes along!
